What Makes Tulum International Airport a Game-Changer?

The launch of Tulum International Airport is a pivotal moment in making this enchanting destination more accessible. With a host of airlines ready to connect Tulum with major cities across the globe (Delta, United Airlines, JetBlue, Air Canada & More), travelers can now enjoy easier and more varied options for their journey. It’s official: Tulum – and now its new airport – have been discovered. The new airport in Tulum was built to accommodate soaring demand to what was once an under-the-radar backpacker-friendly beach destination that has now exploded in popularity along Mexico’s already-busy Riviera Maya. Currently, most visitors to Tulum fly to Cancun International Airport (CUN) and then make a roughly two-hour drive via car or bus. The new Tulum airport promises to make the journey much easier. U.S. carriers have since joined the rush to Tulum, betting that the seemingly endless demand for flights to Cancun can be replicated at TQO. With these developments, Tulum is set to become even more accessible, attracting a wider range of travelers eager to explore its mesmerizing beauty and vibrant culture.

When does Tulum International Airport officially open?

The new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport has officially opened on December 1st, 2023! Check out the video below of the first commercial flight to land at the new Tulum airport:

What is the Official Tulum Airport Code?

If using IATA, including Google Flights, the code is TQO for the new Tulum airport. While ICAO engines will use MMTU as the airport code.

Where is Tulum International Airport Located?

Tulum International Airport is strategically situated just 12 miles from Tulum’s center, revolutionizing travel to this region. This location significantly shortens the trip compared to the lengthy journey from Cancun International Airport, which lies about 70 miles away.

This opens up an entirely new set of options for those looking at resorts like Bahia Principe Grand Tulum, or the ever-popular Barcelo Maya complex. And travel time to the new Secrets Tulum from the entrance of Tulum International Airport is only 20 minutes! We’ve put together an estimated travel time list of the most popular resorts in the area. Check it out below!

Something to take note of however is that the actual terminal is a fair bit past the actual entrance, around another 10 minutes.

Can I Get Airport Transfers/Shuttles From Tulum International Airport? What Other Transportation Options Will Exist?

What About Tren Maya at Tulum International Airport?

For those of you eagerly following along the Tren Maya project, an official Tulum Aeropuerto station will directly connect the new airport to the Mayan Train. However reports show that the station hasn’t been completed yet, and is unlikely to be ready for the airports official opening in 2023. A more realistic timeline for the train station to be completed is mid-2024.
